Venue: Maroondah
Weather: Sunny Pitch: Good Score: LOST 45 - 22 Referee: Gerry Collins Captain: Clive Welti Man of the Match: Tony Tenant A bright sunny day and close to home for the Quenchies. A good turnout today was expected. How wrong can we be. At kick-off we had 12 players facing a younger team with 20 plus players. With a few players borrowed from our hosts(Maroondah) Gerry Collins the Ref started the game and within 5 minutes Moorabbin had scored and we were down 7 – 0. With 2 second rowers playing in the centres the opposing backs cut swathes through the Boxhill defences and only desperate tackling halted a number of tries. When Dr. Carl Ramage took the field the Boxhill attack took some purpose and his surging runs through the opposition brought some balance to our depleted backs. Another 2 tries from Moorabbin in quick succession brought the score to 21 – 0. The Boxhill forwards took the ball up many times only to be stopped just short of the line. Eventually this constant pressure resulted in Rod Jones crashing over for a try. The ensuing conversion by Clive Welti brought the score to 21- 7. Moorabbin again attacked and scored another 2 tries before half time. The score being 35 -7. After the break Boxhill applied the pressure and saw Moorabbin pushed back time and again with the forwards driving towards the line with rolling mauls until a try by Tony Tennant. 35 -12. From the kick-off Welti kicked long into the opposing 22 metre area and forcing the line out. This tactic used several times gained much needed territory and the lineouts favoured Boxhill forwards who were able to spoil and pressurise the opposing forwards. Moorabbin scored twice in the second half and this brought the score to 45 -17. A try from Peter Fuller resulting from a forward drive gave the Boxhill team confidence. Probing runs by the backs and resolute tackling by Collard (who recently returned from battle strewn Bankock) resulted in a try in the corner by the said Collard after a brilliant backline movement . The final score being 45 -22. The next match is at 3:15pm on 29th May at Harlequins Ground (Melways map 60 H12)
