Venue : Moorabbin
Weather : Fine & windy
Pitch : Good
Score : LOST 71 to 5
Referee : Lee Lorne
Captain : Nathan (Captain Mannering) Banks
Man of the Match : Clive Welti
On a blustery fine day the Quenchies turned up to do battle with Moorabbin. At least some did.
Lacking some outside backs for a variety of reasons we fielded a full team. Kicking into the wind the Quenchies found it hard to make advancement particularly when kicking as the ball travelled 2 metres forward then 3 metres back. Moorabbin started to score and by half time had crossed our line 7 times. We were grateful they did not have a kicker. Several forays into the Moorabbin half saw Boxhill stopped short by tenacious defence. Clive Welti at 5/8ths led the backs in several attacking manoeuvres forcing the Moorabbin players to cover defence. Carlo Fogale chased and tackled all day but was outnumbered by too many Moorabbin players supporting the ball carrier.
In the second half the forwards made inroads against the Moorabbin Pack with rolling mauls gaining advantage to then send the backs away in another probing attack. Moorabbin still managed to score several times and it looked like Boxhill would be scoreless until one of the “ring ins” scored for us . WE held them to only 6 tries in the second half as they must have been tiring.
With too many players absent many had to play a full game and this showed our fitness levels.

The start of a new season at Boxhill . We welcomed several new players have joined us this year 2 of them not having played the game before. They are Hinga Marsh, Carlo Fogale, David Richardson, Raymon Geijels and also Mike Railey returning after a few years absence.
A confident team led by Kevin Walsh took the field and were soon putting pressure on Eltham. The forwards won good ball and Quinton Ritchie sent the backs into attack with the ball reaching Collard on the wing where he was tackled into touch. The play seesawed up and down the field until Eltham scored out wide. With the score 5 – 0 Boxhill again attacked and through a series of second phase play until Pete Fuller starting the season after being in a good paddock scored used his bulk to cross the line to even the score. Eltham scored again and the half time score was 12 – 5./p>
Early in the second half with Boxhill pressing Eltham deep in their own 22 a brilliant intercept by Jiff Reilly in front of the posts resulted in a try. Jiff converted and the score was 12 all.
Shortly afterwards Captain Kevin Walsh crossed the line after a continuous attack by the forwards. With the score at 17-12 Eltham swept down the field and scored out wide to level the scores again. New player David Richardson showed his turn of speed following up a kick to tackle the Eltham Fullback and hold up play until the Boxhill forwards arrived. Shortly after this David received a pass out wide and scored his first try in his maiden game. He was promptly advised that he was up for a slab next week. Eltham replied with another 2 tries late in the second half and just managed to hold out Boxhill till fulltime. It was a very even game and played in the right spirit.
